“Looking forward to things is half the pleasure of them.”
-Anne of Green Gables, L.M. Montgomery
Waiting for a new baby to arrive.
The planning of a wedding.
An entire school year of dance classes leading up to a recital.
Hours of practice on the field before the big game.
Surprising your spouse with a birthday party.
The transitions from elementary to middle to high school.
Anticipation is an important theme in our lives. I love having things to look forward to and that brings me joy. What I have found however, is that those things that we look forward to, don’t have to be big things. They can be simple things too. The simple act of gift giving is one of my very favorite things. I love finding an amazing gift and the anticipation of the receiver’s reaction.
Our house has been eagerly anticipating the end of the school year and the beginning of summer. We’re looking forward to our summer travels and adventures. We’re looking forward to sleeping in, spending lazy days at the pool, and having extra time with our friends. Less structure and little more flexibility. Of course, come August, I will be eagerly anticipating the start of school again!
Anticipation can often lead to great disappointment. For me, I have to focus on the things that did turn out well instead of how things went wrong. I’m trying to teach my children the same concept. If you only see the negative, you won’t enjoy the positive.
So…this week I’m thankful for the things I’m able to look forward to:
- our upcoming road trip
- beach time with friends and family
- catching up on my reading
- an upcoming anniversary
- rainy day TV marathons
- lounging by the pool
- golf and tennis
- fresh produce from the farmer’s market
- day trips
I also have a special family project coming up in about two weeks…I can’t wait to tell y’all more about it soon!
Anticipation and gratitude keep me in a positive frame of mind. What are you looking forward to right now? Let me know what y’all think!
