We’ve lived an hour from Raleigh in Rocky Mount for over twenty years. Whether it’s a quick trip to Raleigh for the day for shopping, a sporting event, date night, or lessons for our kids, we’ve spent a huge amount of time exploring the City of Oaks.
There’s never a shortage of things to see and do in Raleigh; it’s one of our favorite North Carolina cities!
Outdoor Activities in Raleigh
Raleigh, NC is the perfect destination for outdoor enthusiasts. There are so many fun outdoor activities in Raleigh from hiking and biking to kayaking, fishing, and more.
Pullen Park
Pullen Park in Raleigh, NC is a true gem! Established in 1887, it was the first public park in North Carolina and the fifth oldest amusement park in the country. Despite its long history, Pullen Park boasts a wide range of modern amenities to keep visitors entertained.
One of the park’s highlights is the charming carousel, which has been delighting visitors for over a century. Built around 1900, it’s even designated as a Raleigh Historic Landmark. But the pedal boats and miniature train were always home-runs with my kids any day of the week.
If you’re looking for some more active fun, Pullen Park has got you covered too. There are fields for sports, outdoor tennis courts, and an indoor aquatic center where you can swim and splash to your heart’s content.
Of course, you can’t forget about the park’s natural beauty. Take a stroll along the trails and enjoy the fresh air and scenery. And if you’ve got little ones with you, they’ll love the HUGE playground.
The park has a small cafe where you can grab a bite to eat or you can bring your own picnic. If you plan ahead, you can even sign up for one of the park’s art classes or come to see a play.
Pullen Park is a wonderful place to spend a day with family and friends. So hop on the carousel, ride the train, play some games, or just relax in the sunshine – there’s something for everyone here!

Explore William B. Umstead Park
Umstead Park boasts over 5,500 acres of woodlands, lakes, and trails that are perfect for hiking, biking, fishing, and picnicking. The park is also home to a variety of wildlife, including deer, foxes, and a plethora of bird species.
One of the park’s main attractions is the 22-mile network of hiking and biking trails that wind through the woods and around the lakes. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or just looking for a leisurely stroll, Umstead Park has a trail for you. Some of the most popular trails include the Company Mill Trail, the Loblolly Trail, and the Sal’s Branch Trail.
If you’re feeling adventurous, you can also rent a canoe or kayak and paddle around the park’s three scenic lakes. Fishing is also permitted in the lakes with a valid NC fishing license.
For those who prefer to take it easy, Umstead Park has plenty of picnic areas, as well as a visitors’ center with exhibits on the park’s history and wildlife.
Kids can participate in the Junior Ranger program, Storytime at the Park, and more in what Umstead Park likes to call “nature’s classrooms.”

Juniper Level Botanic Gardens is a 28 acre educational, research, and display garden offering garden visits, classes, and presentations. Make sure to visit the website before visiting as they are only open to the public specific weekends and other times by appointment.
Dorothea Dix Park
Dorothea Dix Park is one of Raleigh’s most beloved destinations for locals and visitors alike!
This 308-acre park offers stunning views of downtown Raleigh’s skyline and is the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of city life. Named after Dorothea Dix, a mental health reformer who advocated for the creation of public parks as therapeutic spaces, the park offers a wide range of activities for visitors of all ages.
Take a stroll through the beautifully manicured gardens, enjoy a picnic in one of the open fields, or bring your furry friend to the dog park for some playtime.

Located behind the WRAL television studios and near North Carolina State University, you’ll find the WRAL Azalea Gardens. A wonderful little escape within the city since 1959, WRAL Gardens is the perfect place to immerse yourself in nature. The gardens are at their peak around mid-April, when the azaleas are popping, but a lovely stop year round!
Bike the Art to Heart Trail
If you want to explore Raleigh via the greenways and trails, consider biking the six mile Art to Heart Trail. Begin your trek from Downtown Raleigh ending at the North Carolina Museum of Art or vice versa, but remember the trail is not a loop. So prepare to return to your starting point or plan in advance how you’re getting home.
The Art to Heart Trail in Raleigh passes behind Meredith College, through North Carolina State University, Pullen Park, Boylan Heights, and finishing at the Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts.

You’re either love it or hate it. But you have to at least try it.
There’s actually two types of North Carolina BBQ. Eastern NC BBQ is typically “whole hog” BBQ with a vinegar based sauce. Western style BBQ, also known as Lexington style BBQ, typically has a red sauce made up of ketchup, vinegar, pepper, and spices and uses only the pork shoulder.
Insider Tips: Clyde Cooper’s BBQ downtown is pretty authentic eastern NC BBQ. You’ll find really really delicious BBQ from The Pit Authentic BBQ and The Lab at North Hills. And if you happen to be looking for Texas style BBQ and the best brisket in town, go to Prime BBQ in Knightdale. You’re welcome.

The Angus Barn is a Raleigh Institution.
With one of the largest wine cellars in the country, private dining options, event space, a cigar lounge, and a damn good steak, it’s no wonder The Angus Barn is one of the most popular restaurants in Raleigh.
If you want to celebrate a special occasion at the Angus Barn, you need to book way in advance. Seriously, by mid-summer, all holiday reservations fill up. The restaurant has won many awards including best steak, best fine dining, Wine Spectator Awards, and more.

Serving up breakfast, brunch, and lunch since the 1950’s, Big Ed’s is like sitting down to eat at Grandma’s house. Red and white checked table cloths, antiques hanging from the ceiling and southern hospitality at it’s finest, this is a true southern experience that can’t be missed.
The original location in Downtown Raleigh can get quite busy on the weekends, but we think it’s worth the wait!
Big Ed’s is also one of our favorite kid friendly restaurants in Raleigh!
Try Howling Cow Dairy Education Center and Creamery
Howling Cow Ice Cream is a must-visit spot for anyone with a sweet tooth in Raleigh, North Carolina. This special creamery offers a wide variety of delicious flavors made with fresh, local milk and cream from the over 300 cows raised on North Carolina State University’s campus.
Want to learn even more about Howling Cow Ice Cream? Schedule a tour of the Randleigh Dairy Heritage Museum. Visitors can take a tour of the dairy farm to learn about the process of making ice cream.

- The PNC Arena is a popular spot for big-name concerts and sports events, with a seating capacity of over 18,000. We’ve been lucky enough to see everything from a Hurricane’s Hockey game to concerts like Ed Sheeran and Justin Timberlake to shows like Disney on Ice at the PNC Arena.
- The Red Hat Amphitheater is a more intimate outdoor venue located in downtown Raleigh that can accommodate up to 6,000 people. Some of our favorite shows at Red Hat have been O.A.R., Rebelution, and Kidz Bop.
- The Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts offers multiple theaters and stages, including the Meymandi Concert Hall and the Fletcher Opera Theater, where visitors can enjoy musical performances, theater productions, and dance shows. We have really enjoyed seeing The Nutcracker at Christmastime, The Carolina Ballet, and The Ugly Duckling Ballet when my daughter was younger.
- Coastal Credit Union Music Park at Walnut Creek is an outdoor amphitheater in Raleigh, North Carolina that hosts a variety of musical performances. We’ve seen everyone from Dave Matthews Band to Maroon 5 to The Beach Boys at Walnut Creek.
- The Ritz is a smaller concert venue but still a great venue for live music. It is definitely a more intimate setting and more popular during winter since it is an indoor venue.
- Lincoln Theatre is another indoor smaller venue for live music and shows.
- Koka Booth Amphitheatre is an outdoor performing arts amphitheater in Cary, North Carolina.
- Raleigh Little Theater has been around to educate and entertain North Carolinians for over 75 years. I have great memories of taking my kids to see some of their friends in plays and musicals over the years.
